LET NAZIS MIX

BISHOP’S PLAN FOR PRISONERS OF WAR Dr. E. S. Woods, Bishop of Lichfield, suggested in the House of Lords that young Nazi prisoners in England should be sent to harvesting camps with picked young English men and women. He could not help thinking, he said, that such an experiment would be abundantly justified. We should do all in our power to mitigate bitterness, rekindle hope, and rebuild the ruins of human life. Lord Nathan, Under-Secretary for War, in his reply for the Government, stated that some 1200 Italian prisoners of war were so appreciative of the treatment they had received here that they were remaining “to fulfil the civil functions of citizenship in the ordinary way.” Prisoners of war, he explained, were used only on work of national importance for which suitable British labour was not available. The total number employed in the United Kingdom was 338,000, of whom 160,000 were at the service of the Ministry of Agriculture, particularly in harvesting.
