OHOPE SLIP
NO WORD FROM P.W.D. No word concerning the safety or otherwise of the threatened slip at Oliope has as yet been received by the residents most directly concerned, from the Public Works Department. An effort was made, by the Ohope Progress League to ascertain when it would be safe for those residents who had been warned to vacate their houses, to move back, and a telegram was forwarded to the Minister. No reply has been received to date. Word from Mr W. Sullivan M.P. was received stating that he had seen the report of the geologist, which indicated that there was no immediate danger provided normal conditions prevailed, and that those residents who had moved could return to their homes. The majority are now back in their own houses, but the absence of any official word from the Department is causing concern. Some have erected heavy fences as a protection against boulders should the slip occur, but it is expected that the planting of trees on the area which is breaking away should serve to ‘mat’ the dangerous portion and avoid a catastrophe.
