REHAB. LOANS
ALMOST £27,000,000 UNTIL END OF AUGUST Although registering a drop of almost £200,000 below the record total established in July, rehabilitation loan authorisations for August reached £1,703,293 and brought total authorisations made until the end of that month to £26,706,903. The latter amount represented advances to 34,620 ex-servicemen and women of the recent war, of whom 31,703 were men returned from overseas war theatres, 33 were returned servicewomen, 2513 were discharged home service personnel, IJD6 were ex-members of the Merchant Navy and 265 were widows and dependants of deceased servicemen. During August 1628 authorisations were made, all but 113 of these being to men returned from overseas. • Farms and Houses A further 213 loans approved during August to establish ex-service-men in single-unit farms brought the number assisted in that category to 2822, as apart from those developing Crown subdivisions with promise) of a title. The 213 advances represented £869,457, while the 2822 approved to date have been to a total value of £10,698,600. • In the preceding month the record number of 225 advances was authorised. Similarly with housing loans
there was only a slight decrease on the previous month’s figres. August saw 547 loans authorised, 319 valued at £324,890 being for the purchase of existing dwellings and 228 to a value of £327,885 being for the erection of new 'homes. This made the total number until the end of August 10,826 representing £12,381,324, of these 3901 (£5,448,840) were for erection and 6925 (£6,932,484) were for purchase, there were also included 6156 supplementary interest-free loans valued at £931,549, intended to bridge the gap between present-day costs and prewar prices. The addition of 5790 ex-servicemen assisted to obtain State rental houses brings the total of those to receive direct housing aid to 16,616, apart from the 2822 already mentioned as settled on farms of their own. Business Loans
A slight decrease for the month resulted in 173 authorisations being made to ex-servicemen commencing in business, the amount involved being £117,729. Until the end of August 3768 such loans were authorised to a total value of £2,087,196. Other financial assistance rendered during August was: Free-of-in-terest furniture loans, 675 for month, value £62,557, 16,000 to date, value £1,479,032; free-of-interest loans for tools of trade, 16 for month, value £570, 941 to date, value £31,217; miscellaneous advances 4 for month, value £205, 163 to date, value £29,534.
