Close Finishes A photo chart apparatus to record the finishes of races will be used at the Auckland Spring Meeting. The necessary tower is now in course of erection. The Harcourt Stakes The next appearance in public of Golden Souvenir will be in the Harcourt Stakes to be decided at the Wellington Spring Meeting this month. This event has been won more than once by the same owner’s Kindergarten. The Leading Winners At the head of the list of winning owners for the season 1945-46 is Mr W. S. Goosman with £14,037, Mr E. N. Fitzgerald £12,505 being second and Mr Peter Louis third with £11,768. Golden Souvenir £10,545 is top of the winning horses, Master Dash £5785 and Langne d’Or being next in order. A Derby Trial Lord Barwon was started in the Rosehill Guineas as a Derby trial. He finished well back in ninth place, and will have to improve quite a lot before he wins a Derby or Cup on “the other side.” An Extended Spell The successful hack Brockton, trained at Ellerslie, has been turned out for an extended spell. He started in open company at the Avondale meeting, but failed to run prominently. The Buyer Scored One of the best hacks seen out this season is the Pink Coat—Night Gift gelding Kenwyn. He was bred at Timaru and as a yearling realised 80 guineas. He is now regarded as a bargain at the price. Raced For Six Seasons The Cambria Park gelding, Cambria, started racing as a two-year-old and is now eight. At the recent Avondale fixture he did not show his usual speed and may be slightly on the down grade. Money Circulation The Wanganui meeting last month was the best financially in the long history of the club. Four Successive Victories The Defoe colt, Howe, has now registered four wins in succession. In the Wanganui Guineas he ran the mile in record time for the event, lmin. 40secs. so should have a very successful season.
Mr Rosa Scores The Mr Standfast—Lucy Rose gelding, Mr Rosa, the travelling companion to Lord Barwon, is reported to be training on very satisfactory in Australia. About ten days ago at Victoria Park he won a Barrier Trial very convincingly.
Progressive On the suggestion of the Takanini branch of the Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association the Avondale Jockey Club has decided to include in its principal programme each season a weight-for-age event. The decision has been well received.
