RUGBY FOOTBALL

JUNIOR GAMES

UNITED v TAURANGA

Two Junioi* matches, one at Whakatane and one at Tauranga were the only games in which local Union teams took part during the weekend.

In Tauranga, Whakatane United lost to the home side by 13 points to 9. The match was mainly a forward struggle,' and very even, the local lads having the edge on the Tauranga pack, but dropping points in the back line.

The Tauranga men made full use of the sun, and the handling in the line was excellent. Outstanding man in the team was the fullback who secured 7 of the- 13 points, which came from 2 tries, 2 conversions and a penalty kick.

On the Whakatane side, Quigg and G. Goodall were responsible for a try apiece, and Hunt’s penalty kick which crossed the bar neatly brought the points to 9. The most spectacular run of the day was put up by Rutherford and R. Goodall who went in a dual passing rush for practically the full length of the field. The move broke down just a few yards short of the line after each man had handled five or six times.

Dines, Skelton and Ward were prominent men in the forwards. G. Moore also played well up till just before half-time when he retired with an injured knee and was replaced by P. Maxwell. Taken on the whole, the match was played in excellent spirit and was good from the point of view of players and spectators alike. Paroa v Poroporo

The approach of the ‘hot season’ was amply evidenced in the 'forced energy’ match at the Domain between Paroa and Poroporo. The majority of players dispensed with jerseys whilst some also left their boots on the side line. The game resulted in a win for Poroporo by 15 points to nil.

UNITED CLUB JUNIORS All Junior players are to at the Domain at 12.45 p.m. to play Poroporo in the final of the Wilson Cup. SENIORS Bus will leave the Rock for Cambridge at 8 o’clock on Saturday morning. Players unable to make the trip are asked to contact Mr Bert Norman immediately.
