ROWING ACTIVITIES

PAST SEASON REVIEWED CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT At the annual general meeting of the Whakatane Rowing Club last Thursday evening a year of useful work was reviewed in the Club Captain’s (Mr Bert Norman) report, which read as follows: “The past season was most successful both from a financial and a rowing point of view. Social Activities: During the year the club ran a number of popular dances from which it derived a fair margin of profit. One was also run for the R.S.A. Queen Carnival fund and resulted in the sum of £2O being raised. To wind up the season, and present the numerous trophies won during the season a private dance which was very well attended by members was held. This proved a most enjoyable evening for those present. A launch picnic to the Raurimas also took place. There were’ about 30 present and the day was spent in races on the island, exploring, swimming and fishing. The return to the mainland was made at sunset after a grand day.

Rowing The club spent a very busy season in this respect. A series of fortnightly trial fours, ten in all were held and most of these were well patronised and keenly contested. The club paid a visit to the Tauranga Club on one of their club days and took part in the racing. One of the members was in the winning crew. Tauranga challenged for the King’s Picture Cup and brought three other crews over to compete against our crews. It was a very good day’s sport and quite a number of \the public turned out to watch the events. Tauranga were successful in taking the Cup away. The first Cup race was called off owing to faulty gear in the Tauranga boat. In the re-row Tauranga beat Whakatane by a margin of six inches. The Whakatane Club’s re-chal-lenge to Tauranga was not accepted for some unknown reason. There was only one crew sent to regattas during the season. This was the heavyweights’ who journeyed to Ngaruawahia and gained third place out of ten starters. A very creditable performance. During the winter months the club house was struck by a gale and severely damaged necessitating a big outlay of expense to effect repairs. Through this, we are not in as good a financial position we would otherwise have been. The membership for the past season was 30 active and 18 honorary. I would in conclusion like to take this opportunity of thanking all officers and members of the club for their co-operation and interest during the past season.”
