PARADE AND DISPLAY

DISTRICT GUIDES ASSEMBLE PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER WELCOMED To further mark the visit of Provincial Guide Commissioner Mrs Balfour, to the Whakatane district, a parade of Guides and Brownies took place at the Awakeri School last Saturday afternoon. With the exception of Waiohou and Opotiki all centres were fully represented and under the perfect weather conditions and beautiful green background the whole effect of the march past, welcome and entertainment was excellent. With colour-guard in advance the long line of Guides swung smartly on to the parade ground, showing a steadiness and bearing which would have done credit to a military unit. They were followed by the Brownie Packs, who locked arms as they went by in threes and saluted their P.C.

The inspection was carried out by the two senior officers, Provincial Commissioner Balfour, and District Commissioner Rushbrook. This was followed by the initiation of a number of new Guides from the Whakatane Company and the presentation of the first all-round cord to be won in this area, to Guide Pamela Francis.

The period of entertainment by the various Guide and Brownie units was bright and interesting and consisted • signalling, folk ddncing, group, choruses and Maori action songs. The special Guide song by the Awakeri Girls was a delight in itself.

Expressing her great appreciation of the parade, Mrs Balfour congratulated the Guiders concerned and added that there was 'no doubt in her mind but that Whakatane would become one of the foremost districts in the province if the present progress could be maintained. The County Scout Commissioner who was associated with the official party also spoke, congratulating the Guides on their niarching and display and the D.C. on the great progress which had been made in such a short time. The proceedings concluded with ‘Taps’.

Afternoon tea was served informally by the Guides before the athering dispersed, cheers having been first given for Mesdames Balfour and Rushbrook.
