WELCOME HOME
POPULAR AWAKERI FUNCTION DISTRICT’S FINAL DRAFT The Awakeri' Hall was filled to capacity and an air of good cheer and friendliness prevailed, when on Saturday last, the final members of the services to represent Awakeri, were welcomed back home. They were Messrs. B. Butler, J. Goyle and O. Ernest, who had all seen considerable army service. The dance music was supplied by the Premier Band and the duties of M.C. were very capably carried out by Mr Coll. MacDonald. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs Brian Butler. After the supper interlude, Mr Don Butler, on behalf of residents and friends in the district made the customary presentation of an envelope containing a cheque. Mr Butler paid tribute to the boys’ service in a bright speech and musical honours were accorded the guests, who suitably responded in turn. Mr Butler also took the opportunity of advising those present that at an early date the grand final of the Welcome Homes would take place in the Awakeri Hall. This would be in the form of a dance and would mark the wind-up of the Awakeri Welcome and Farewell Committee’s work. All the district boys who had seen service and were safely returned would be the guests of the evening on his occasion, and Awakeri had their best foot forward to make this an occasion they would remember.
