This Prolonged Wail
-Can not something be done to ensure that when the town sirens sound in the event of a fire, they are cut off after a reasonable time. On the occasion of last night’s emergency the town re-echoed to the wail of the siren for well over ten minutes, prolonging unnecessarily what must have been an ordeal for anyone suffering from a nervous disorder particularly hospital patients. We have spoken of this before, and with all due respect to the Brigade, and the splendid task it performs, we ask again if something cannot be done to reduce the time of the siren sounding to a minimum. Guide Commissioner’s Visit
This coming weekend, Mrs F. A. Balfour, the Provincial Guide Commissioner will be in the Whakatane district, and will take part .in a number of activities organised by the Awakeri Company. On Friday the annual meeting will be held, and a reception to Mrs Balfour will take place. On Saturday, district Guide Companies and Brownie Packs will assemble at the Awakeri school, where an inspection will take place. This has been timed for 1.30 p.m., and will be followed by items by the various companies. The programme will conclude on Sunday when a Church parade will take place in Whakatane at the Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Interested members of the public are cordially invited to attend any of the functions.
