OUTBREAK OF FIRE
WAIRAKA MEETINGHOUSE Shortly before 8 p.m. last night a fine broke out in the Wairaka Maori Meetinghouse in the pah adjacent the Eastern Strand. The building which was an old wooden structure of particular historic interest, was partially gutted, but from the Maori viewpoint, the damage to the structure will be regarded very lyThe fire, when first discovered, was seated in the ceiling and had spread amongst the light woodwork of the rafters. The prompt arrival of the Brigade, however, confined the flames to a limited section, and saved the main part of the walls. The Wairaka Meetinghouse has been notable for the carved portals on the main entrance which are mentioned by Elsdon Best in his book “Children of the Mist,” the most complete history of the Matatua tribe. The main panel concerns the figure of the Sea Goddess, the traditional progenator of the tribe, but it is remarkable for the early impact of the Victorian influence of the Pakeha settlers, and is portrayed in traditional form surmounted by a very European-look-ing crown. No doubt the elders of the tribe will see to it that no delay casioned in making the necessary repairs. "
