TANEATUA FOOTPATHS

QUESTION OF RENEWAL At the last meeting of the Whakatane County Council, the question of the renewing of footpaths at Taneatua w§s brought forward for ■discussion in view of a letter from the Minister of Works stating that at a recent meeting of the Main Highways Board, it had been decided in accordance with its usual -standards, to 'provide a£l for £1 subsidy on the cost of a 6ft. path only. Cr H. C. McCready said that the path in question was in very bad order, and unless the Council did something shortly,' there was every chance of people spraining or breaking their ankles. A 12 foot path was needed outside the shops, but the owners of the business premises might make some contribution towards this themselves. The stretch from the corner of Railway Road to Howell’s Road would be served sufficiently by a 6 foot path. Cr Luxton agreed that a 12 foot path was necessary outside the shops. It was decided that the Engineer should prepare estimates for a 12 foot concrete path in front, of the shops, and a 6 foot path in the intervening stretches.
