NOT FAVOURED

SOUTH AUCKLAND EDUCATION BOARD

SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S DECISION

At the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee the decision was made to reply to a circular letter received asking for support to form a separate South Auckland Education Board, to the effect that the Whakatane Committee considered it was receiving good service from the present Board, and therefore was not prepared to lend its support to the new project.

Members were unanimous in the opinion that a sub-division of the present Board would gain nothing whatsoever for the Whakatane School. Mr W. Whittaker expressed the opinion that the Whakatane Committee was getting good service from the present Board, and he could not see that a new one would do any more. Mr F. W. Lysaght agreed, adding that the present full Board should carry more weight with the Department than a split one.

The Chairman (Mi’ J. W. Wilson) intimated that the Auckland Board was not in favour of a division adding that at present the Whakatane School had a lot to gain by remaining under Auckland. Some time ago he had been in favour of the establishment of a South Auckland Board, because he felt that the service received was not up to standard. He had since learnt however, that delayed replies and postponed decisions were not the fault of the Board, but of the Department. The Whakatane School now had a longterm plan in view which was acceptable to the Auckland Board. If they were to be placed under a new Board with a new architect, it was quite possible that much of it would be lost. In any case, ground which had taken months to cover would all have to be gone over again. As stated above, it was decided to forward a reply to the effect that the Whakatane Committee was not in favour of forming a South Auckland Board.
