brought Paroa’s points to 19. The Galatea defence continued to crumble almost visibly and in a few minutes Goldsmith had touched down between the posts for another three points. The final whistle sounded shortly after, the score board reading Paroa 22, Galatea 0. Mr J. Keepa refereed.
BRACKEN CUP FINAL UNITED v WAIMANA HOME SIDE’S DECISIVE WIN The United Senior team scored a decisive victory over Waimana by 33 points to 6 in the final game for the Bracken Cup at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday afternoon. The visitors were no match for the United combination which time and again drove through the opposing defence to score, and the respective points give a fair indication of play. McGougan was the most prominent player on the field, his kicking alone contributing 15 points to his side.
Play opened at a fast pace the Whakatane pack hunting the leather to the visitors’ quarter. Defence measures checked the rush, but the backs took over and within five minutes of the opening whistle McGougan had been sent across to score. The same man converted. Almost immediately after Boynton sent a penalty kick over the bar for Waimana bringing the score to United 5, Waimana 3.
The next try came from Kahui who went over near the corner flag after a melee on the line. McGougan’s kick from a long way out again was sound, and Whakatane’s points stood at 10. The next rush took the leather to the line and Green scored, the points in combination with McGougan’s added 2 being raised to 15.
The Waimana defence was no match for the thrusts of the Whakatane men who hunted together and unerringly found the weak spots. The score began to give indications of cricket proportions when: McGougan crossed and converted again after running for three-quar-ters of the length of the field. The same man followed up with a penalty kick after a brief period of up and down play adding a further 3. The second half was patterned on the first with United showing a complete mastery of the field. Takao succeeded in crossing once for Waimana, whilst Morpeth and McGougan scored for United, the latter man converting on both occasions. The final score of 33 points to 6 in favour of United represented one of the most convincing wins for the home side this season. Mr F. Peebles was referee.
JUNIOR FIELD WILSON CUP GAME The first game in the Wilson Cup knock-out series was played between Ruatoki and United and resulted in a win for the home side by 14 points to 9. In the first half particularly the Whakatane boys hunted together and piercing the weak spots in Ruatoki's defence sent three men, Stewart, Rutherford and Goodall, across to score. Rutherford’s conversion and Hunt’s penalty kick which he sent over the bar completed the points. After the change-over the game became more willing, Ruatoki putting in some determined work. The United defence was thoroughly tested but proved sound Ruatoki’s points coming from a field goal by Pieta. Mr H. Mahy refereed.
