POISON GAS
TO BE DUMPED AT SEA Stored at Belmont since early in 1943, 1500 tons of deadly poison gas is to be dumped at sea 50 miles out of Wellington. The job, which is expected to take at least two weeks, is to be carried out from the Matai, due at Wellington -within the next fortnight. Fuses have been removed from the 251 b. shells that contain the gas, ■ but to ensure that there is no risk to those carrying out the work, full Admiralty and War Office stipulated safeguards will be taken. The gas is of the blister variety that can swiftly eat through clothing. Protective gear and respirators will be on hand. Boxes containing the shells will be filled with sand to guard against possible leakages. Each box, too, is painted with detector substance that will indicate even a pinpoint of escaped gas. There will be little ceremony about the disposal. The gas will simply be lifted from the hold of the ship on to a chute, down which it will slide into the sea.
The Matai is expected to make daily trips to sea until all the gas is safely under the water.
