RAPID TRANSPORT

MELBOURNE TO WHAKATANE PEDIGREE EGG SITTINGS The speeding up of the air service between this country and Australia is a well known factor in these postwar days of aero expansion, but it takes an actual demonstration to indicate just how swiftly goods can be transferred from one country to another, and this occurred last week. The incident we refer to was the despatch by air-mail service of two half sittings of pedigree Australorp and White Leghorn eggs from Melbourne to Mr Harry Jackson of Haig Street, Whakatane. Believe it or not, the eggs left Melbourne on Thursday and were safe and sound under the sitting hen in Whakatane on Saturday eevning. The greatest time lag was between Auckland and Whakatane. In all the eggs travelled nearly 2000 miles, the major portion of which was by air. The eggs, we understand, were packed in cotton wool, and sawdust, and arrived in perfect condition.
