STATE HOUSING Sir, —The latest figures given in the House of Representatives show that in all in 10 years 19,000 houses have been built by the State which is less than 2,000 a year. It is beginning to dawn upon many people that I the housing position'will get worse and this is true because we are using the wrong agency to provide us with homes. This position became very clear in Britain. The building trade in Britain was one of the greatest industries prior to 1905 when the idea was adopted that houses could be built by passing measures to build them. By 1930 some 400 odd Acts had been passed and the number employed in the building trade had deoreased to one half. Here was an amazing thing. With an everincreasing demand the number of 'builders had tremendously I ed. This is the economic paradox unknown in economic history. We have yet to learn that politicians cannot produce houses or anything else we want. We are faced with shortages not only of houses but of almost everything else and industry is crying out for labour. It does not seem to occur to us that the adoption of false ideas has caused this for we have now entirely .displaced labour forces from industry on to the State pay roll. We will not remedy the position 'until we understand that we cannot build houses by voting for houses and that all those things we require can only be provided by one agency—by individuals operating under the force of competition. Yours etc., ONLOOKER.
THE ENEMY WITHIN
Sir, —If the British Empire -is to survive-the present world crisis, the peoples of Empire will have to demand local control of their own affairs. Not only are we being subjected to heavy external pressure from both Moscow and New York, but we also have a definite fifth column which is working to destroy us from within. The “British” Socialist Government, like all other central Governments throughout the British Empire, is controlled by powerful alien groups which have one, and only * one objective: the imposition of a system of complete regimentation of the British people. The identity and policies of these groups are identical, forming an insidious army of occupation Controlled by the London School of Economics. The London School of Economics was established by big finance and the international Socialists, to train men to foist on the Governments of the British Empire policies which would lead to the internal collapse of the Empire, in order that it can* be taken over more easily by the international financiers of New York. Now when we find that the leading economic advisers on both sides of the House are students of that perverse school of thought, it is not surprising to find a split section on both sides of the House, on the Bretton Woods Pact. There is more to be said. ‘Why’ this silence of Mr Peter Fraser? If he cannot put it to the House, for fear of repudiation, then he should put such a matter of such grave importance to the ffeople to decide. To sign the Bretton Woods Pact (as Mr Morgan Williams put it) is to hand over our economic independence. No. country under centralised control of its economic policy from outside can administer Government for the people, and to sign the Bretton Woods Pact will be a gross betrayal of this country and the British people- in
particular, and will destroy reciprocal trade within the Empire. I congratulate the-R.S.A. on the stand they have taken. Will you the citizens of this country help to remove the enemy within your gates? Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW.
