WHAKATANE CLUB MEETS EXHIBITION OF SHIP STAMPS The September meeting of the Whakatane Philatelists Club took place in the Borough Council Chambers last Wednesday evening when the feature of the evening was an exhibition of ‘ship’ stamps, owned by Mr R. S. Phillips of Rangiora. There was an excellent attendance and the president, Mr H. O. Garaway, was in the chair. The ‘ship’ stamps, beautifully mounted and numbering 500, were greatly admired, but it was the accompanying written address by the collector himself which aroused the greatest interest of club members. Mr Phillips had apparently delved deeply into the past to compile his material, and the tales of the sea which were woven about the various stamp sets were both an interest and an inspiration to the meeting.
The monthly competition instituted by Mr R. Coates on general stamp knowledge was won by Mr C. Kingsley-Smith who will introduce next month’s competition. An interesting discussion on stamps in general took place which was followed by a short auction of Pacific Island stamps. In future it was decided to create a junior auction from which adult members will be excluded from the bidding. This it was felt will encourage beginners to make an easy start both in the matter of reasonably priced stamps and in exchanges.
The next meeting will be held on the second Wednesday in October.
