The only pianoforte soloist to represent the Whakatane district at the recent Hamilton Musical Festi--val competition was Mary Waterhouse, who entered in the under 10 years class. Mary acquitted herself very well indeed, gaining high points. The judge remarked that Mary gave a.very nice performance, having a delightful touch, ‘with notation and phrasing well in hand.
Miss Joan Sharman who is at present nursing at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, celebrated her 21st birthday on August 31 last. The event took place at her Aunt’s residence in Auckland. Among the many guests present were several of her closest friends. She received many beautiful presents and a suit-, ably engraved gold watch with expanding wristlet, from her parents. The iced cake and flowers came from her home in Whakatane. After a very happy time the party ended at 1 a.m., the guests singing for “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and. “I’m Twenty-one Today.”
