“During the war we searched the world to see what we could find. We got on the track of three super drag-lines. The buckets weigh six tons, and every time she dips into the soil, she scoops 18 yards. She’s a bobby dazzler. She makes the bulldozer look as silly as the bulldozer makes the wheelbarrow,” said the Minister of Works, Mr R. Semple, when referring to soil erosion and river conservation, in an address atHastings.

Manuka for Pipe-making New Zealand manuka roots may make pipes comparable to English briar. This, at any rate, is the subject of enquiry by three- Australian firms who have written to the New Zealand State Forest Service for samples of both manuka and red matipo. Both woods take a decorative finish, season without splitting and are fairly tough. So far as is known, manuka has not been used for pipe making in New Zealand, though rata and totara knot woods have been made up successfully. The State Forest Service is making inquiries for the firms.
