Life Membership of R.S.A. < Referring to the recent gesture of the local branch of the R.S.A., whereby Mr Dave Radcliffe had been made a life member, Col. G. A. Le Lievre at the reception dance last Friday evening, said that it was a signal honour to one who had been a great worker and a Wonderful enthusiast for the Association. (Applause). Trading Store Hours A recommendation to the Directorate of the Rangitaiki Dairy Company that it should take steps to have the trading store opened all day istead of closing between 12 and 1 p.m. as at present was moved by Mr J. Mullins at last week’s annual meeting. Mr Mullins asked that failing that possibility, the store be at least kept open on Pig Sale Mondays.
August Rainfall The total fall of rain for the month of August as recorded at Edgecumbe was 6.04 inches. The total fall for the year to date was 38.94 inches. The average for August over the past ten years is 7.02 inches and the average for the period of eight months over the same decade was 40.51 inches. In Whakatane August recorded 6.22 inches and an average over the past ten -years of 38.52 inches. Farewell Gesture Opportunity was taken of the large gathering in the Edgecumbe hall last Friday eyening to farewell Mr and Mrs Eric List who have been popular and v/ell known residents of the district for a number of years. Mr Dave Radcliffe in bringing Mr and Mrs List forward announced that they were transferring to Hinuera, where Mr List had secured the managership of the dairy factory. On his call musical honours were lustily rendered.
New Zealand Leads On the basis of national population, New Zealand has the greatest concentration of Rotarians anywhere in the world, according to a recent issue of the Rotarian International magazine. The Rotarian, which devotes five pages of illustration and text to the Dominion. New Zealand has 144 Rotarians per 100,000 population, compared with 140 in the United States, 98 in Iceland, 95 in Canada, 62 in Australia, 56 in Chile, and 46 in Great Britain and Ireland. ■< ■ '.■■■■ Straying Stock When a letter came before the Whakatane County Council last Friday asking for provision of impounding facilities at Galatea Councillors all round the table joined in condemning the growing number of apparently ownerless stock straying on the county roads and resulting in a number of minor accidents. Cr McGougan related one incident of a mob of straying cattle which when being driven from a farmer’s prop erty back on to the road stampeded against a parked car causing serious damage. It was conceded that the controlling of cattle on the roads was beyond the powers of the inspector over such a wide area and it was decided to appoint if possible suitable persons in the Galatea and Waiohou districts to act as Assistant Rangers, ■
