WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THORNTON BIRTHDAY PARTY On Thursday, August 8, the Thornton Women’s Institute celebrated its First Birthday Party. Mrs A. Robb presided over a good attendance of members, and welcomed visitors from Whakatane, Matata, Otakiri, and Edgecumbe Sister Institutes. A happy time was spent in competitions and entertainment. Items were rendered by Mrs Leo Stewart, who sang two delightful solos; Mesdames Goodwin and C. Smith Pianoforte Duets which were much enjoyed. A play was also produced by Mrs Spence and was a great success. Those taking part were Mesdames S. Spence, Ducker, Arbuckle and Miss B. McCarthy. Afternoon tea was served by the committee, and the birthday cake made and iced by Mrs Arbuckle, had the single candle lighted by Mrs K. Stewart (Whakatane) and was cut by Mrs Withy (Matata). The afternoon was brought to a close with the . singing of the National Anthem.

W AIM AN A GARDENING CIRCLE The August meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute Gardening Circle was held at the home of Mrs S. Eagle, Waimana. Mrs King presided over a good attendance of members. After the reading of the minutes, members arranged a schedule for the Institute Spring Flower Show. Members are writing out sufficient schedules for all Institute members. A competition, arranged by Mrs Eagle, guessing names of flowers from a catalogue, was won by Mrs Wylde and Mrs R. White. The competitions for the day were well entered for: Best flower, Mrs King 1; Mrs Mitchell 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best vegetable, Mrs King 1; Mrs R. White 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Vase of spring flowers, Mrs King 1; Mrs G. Mitchell 2; Mrs Wylde 3.

Afternoon tea was served by Mrs White and Mrs Woolfield. At the conclusion of the afternoon Mrs King thanked Mrs Eagle for the pleasant afternoon and the hostesses and Mrs Cooper for acting as judge.
