AWAKERI DANCE
WELCOME HOME GATHERING FINAL OF MONTE CARLO The guest of the evening at .the last Welcome Home dance promoted by the Awakeri Committee, was Mr Cecil Batey. In making the usual presentation, Mr Don Butler said that Awakeri residents all joined in extending a warm welcome to the local boys who had fought overseas. 1: &C. 1 The final of the £6 Monte Carlo waltz competition was another feature of the evening and the finalists •were Mr Ray Dawson and Miss Heather Bell; Mr Jack Johnson and Miss Cain; Mr Gear and Miss Phillips; Mr M. Jensen and Miss Luttrell; Mr McCoy and Miss Honeycombe. The guest of the evening and his partner substituted for Mr Skerrett and Miss Tong. After several rounds the winners were Mr McCoy and Miss Honeycombe who received an ovation. The runnersup likewise received a suitable gift. The ordinary Monte Carlo was won by Mr B. Mexted and Miss Betty Newdick.
Splendid music was supplied by the Premier Dance Band while Mr C. Macdonald, once again carried out the duties of M.C. in a happy and efficient manner. When announcing the winners of the Monte Carlo contest Mr Mad Donald took the opportunity of thanking all those who had taken part in the heats at previous dances.
The Awakeri district has only two more men to welcome home and they are expected back from overseas next month. It is anticipated that the final function of the Welcome Home Committee will be held towards the end of October.
