MEETING OF PROGRESS LEAGUE
SCHOOL AND POSTAL SERVICE Mr R. Cobbe presided at the last meeting of the Ohope Progress League held last Monday evening, when a satisfactory attendance of members took place. A number of matters pertaining to the progress of the beach were discussed including the forthcoming Children’s Fancy Dress Gala.
It was decided to take up a petition for the dedication of a new road givihg access to the Western end of the beach; also to press for the creation of a separate and independent school at the beach and for improved postal service. It was pointed out that in such a growing community it was necessary to have a postal delivery and a separate Post Office. Representations will also be made for a new letter box and a public telephone box. The sub-committee appointed to draw up a suitable constitution tabled- a vei’y full report, and the details were fully discussed. The meeting adopted the recommendations in full and instructed the secretary to take immediate steps to incorporate the League.
The work of the Ladies’ Social Committee was emphasised by the secretary, Mr E. R. Marryatt, who said that very successful card evenings had been conducted every Monday night in the Hostel, which had been made available by the proprietors, Mr and Mrs Coker, entirely free of cost. The sum of £23 had been raised in this connection. It was due to the activities of the ladies that the League had been launched with such a sound financial backing. The League will be promoting a Sports Meeting on Anniversary Day, in which it will have the reciprocation of the Caledonian Society for co-operation with that organisation on New Year’s Day.
