EDGECUMBE CONCERT
SUCCESSFUL PRESBYTERIAN EFFORT A’POPULAR FUNCTION On Thursday evening, August 22, the Edgecumbe Presbyterian Hall was well filled for a concert in aid of the Rangitaiki Presbyterian Church Building Fund. A varied programme of good music included the following: Part songs by the Choir; vocal quartettes from Gilbert and Sullivan Operas rendered with excellent balance by Mesdames Armstrong and Rushbrook, Messrs. Jones and D. Paterson; duets from light operas by Mrs Rushbrook and Mr D. Paterson; vocal solos pleasingly rendered by Mesdames Armstrong and Spence and Messrs. Goodwin and Topp; organ solos by Mr Rushbrook and piano solos by Mr Eric Goodwin, who. also was a most able accompanist for this section of the programme.
Mrs Larmer’s artistry was demonstrated in violin solos in which both execution and tone gained the admiration of the audience. She also played obligatos to Mrs Armstrong’s contralto songs. She was ably supported by her accompanist, Mrs V. Stewart.
A bright sketch given by ladies of the Knox Church Dramatic Club, was received with much laughter and applause. A Scottish interlude included first class piping and a Scottish poem by Rev. H. M. Bell, Sword Dance and a Highland Fling by Janice Bell, a clever and lovely little dancer, and old Scottish songs excellently rendered by Mrs Rushbrook.
The performers were thanked by Mr J. Neilsen who said that besides helping a good cause, the concert had reached a high level of entertainment.
