BOXING

TOMORROW’S TOURNAMENT A BIG PROGRAMME Tomorrow night (Thursday) in the Winter Show Buildings at 8 p.m. sharp, the newly formed Whakatane Boxing Association is staging its first tournament, for which exceptionally good entries have been received. Twenty-eight boxers representing Whakatane, Taneatua, Edgecumbe, Waimana and Matata are matched, while Ngongotaha and Tauranga are also represented. The Association’s first interest is the welfare and encouragement of local boxers and it is outlaying a big sum in trophies with the winner of every one of the seventeen bouts to receive a very handsome cup. The committee is confidently expecting full support' from boxing 'fans, in its efforts to provide the best for the boxers and public alike. Great interest will centre tomorrow night on the fight between H. Woods (Whakatane) 9st. 61bs., and P. Batchelor (Ngongotaha) 9st. 81bs. Woods is determined to reverse the very close points decision given against him at Rotorua a fortnight ago.

B. Lambert, 13st. 21bs., of Edgecumbe, meets heavy opposition in S. Hunt,. 13st. 21bs., of • Taneatua. This fight should have the crowd on its toes. Alan Caverhill, 12st. 41bs. of Matata, is meeting Jim Raymond, 12st. lOlbs. of Tauranga. Both are big men, and hard-hitting, clever boxers.

B. Penny, Whakatane, and O. Glover, of Taneatua, should provide a great scrap. Both of these men have a big following of supporters.
