THE JUNIOR FIELD
UNITED DEFEATS PAROA United Juniors notched a onepoint win over Paroa at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday. The match was past and exciting and was anbody’s game right to the final whistle. Both sides displayed a willing spirit and despite the condition of the ground, which was particularly heavy, and in one low spot, under water, contrived to put up a fair display of handling. United’s points were gained by Moore, Hudson and Carling (tries) and Rutherford (conversion) whilst scoring men for Paroa were Mokai and Horne (tries) and Riini and Hakopa (conversions). Final score was 11-10 in favour of United. Mr F. Mitchell! refereed. PARATA CUP GAME ROTORUA v WHAKATANE THIRD GRADE REPS. MEET The third grade representative Rotorua v Whakatane match which took place at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday was won by the home side by 22 points to nil. Both teams displayed a good dash, and for thirds, a good knowledge of Rugby. The packs were evenly matched as regards weight, although the homesters showed better combination.
In the back line, Whakatane was definitely superior, and good flashes of passing came frequently. The first points came from Carter, who sent a penalty kick between the uprights and L. Goodall followed shortly after with a try which -went unconverted. Manuel (Whakatane half) opened the way for the next score. Gathering in, he fed his line with a good pass. Seebeck handed on, and the leather went from man to man across the line to Carter on the wing, who completed the move to cross in the corner. Whakatane 9, Rotorua 0.
The same man scored a perfect solo try a few minutes later. After dribbling from halfway to the sideline on the 25 yard mark, he snapped in the leather and beat the field to the try line which he crossed, running round behind the goal before touching down. Carter converted, bringing the points to 14.
Before the final whistle went, two more tries had been added by Chadwick, and another conversion by Carter, bringing the total points to 22.
On several occasions, Rotorua were unlucky not to score* their moves breaking the last minute against the sound Whakatane defence. Mr A. Breward refereed.
