The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 1946

Local and General

Valley Road Bridge Following the recent heavy rains the filling against the Valley Road bridge at the foot of the Maraetotara Gorge was undermined last Friday and a substantial hole appeared in the surface of the approach. Repair work is now in hand.

Football Injury As the result of an injui’y he received whilst playing football during the Whakatane v Rotorua 3rd Grade Parata Cup match at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday, Hugh Knight, aged 17 years, of Rotorua was admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital suffering from concussion. His' condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory. Car Hits Bank A car driven by Mr Anderson, of Auckland, who was on his way to Opotiki, suddenly careered across the road and hit a bank on Eagle’s Hill, Waimana, recently. The steering arm of the vehicle had become disconnected, and this apparently caused the accident. Mr Anderson was fortunate that the accident happened where it did, instead of in the Waimana Gorge. He received slight abrasions to the face. The radiator and front of the car were damaged.

New Year’s Day Sports Whilst he was visiting Whakatane over the weekend, Mr IST. G. MacLeod, Chief of the. Te Aroha Caledonian Society, conferred with representatives of the Whakatane Caledonians with a view to agreeing upon New Year’s Day Sports programmes which will not clash between centre and centre. Both Societies have been in the habit of running sports meetings on New Year’s Day in the past and it was finally decided to draw up tentative programmes and submit them to each Society together with Tauranga and Rotorua with a view to working up a rotation of sports and Highland gatherings that will not clash in any way over the holiday period.
