REMARKABLE RECORD

WORK OF ST. JOHN AMBULANCE SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT During the year the Whakatane branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, has been responsible for treating 363 cases (292 public and 66 private). Members have also transported 128 cases to hospital and in this process alone have travelled in the ambulance no less than 8,884 miles. These figures were given out by Superintendent E. Ramson to the annual meeting of the branch last week. •Parade attendances have been improved considerably since the new hall has been completed and membership has increased. The activities of the Brigade have been made more interesting through a number of lectures given by the local doctors at least once a month. The deepest appreciation is felt towards those medical men who made these lectures possible. With the new hall nearly completed the forthcoming year will be one of hard training. A new programme is now being drawn up and will be announced later.

Though the Brigade was only small in members on the outbreak of war he thought its record would be hard to beat. Eleven members served with the armed forces. Five served with the combatant forces five with the Medical Corps and one made: the supreme sacrifice. This from 1 a very small Brigade was something to be proud of. From the First Aid classes conducted during the year in the Methodist Hall three very useful members have been added to the Brigade The new year is a particularly active one. Football has taken a new lease of life throughout the whole district and we are attending to more casualties than ever before. Hockey is likewise becoming popular • while Indoor Basketball has started in the Winter Show Buildings. It requires fifteen members of the Brigade and Nursing Division to fully cover a week’s work and this does not include the activities of Edgecumbe and Waimana. Concluding the Superintendent thanked all members of the Brigade for their loyal support, which had made his job a very pleasant one.
