AWAKERI BIRTHDAY MEETING The 17th birthday of the Awakeri branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was celebrated at a social afternoon in the Awakeri Hall on July 16. There was a large attendance of members and friends from the Taneatua and Te Teko Women’s Divisions and the Whakatane and Otakiri Women’s Institutes. An entertaining programme was arranged. Songs by Mrs N.'Carter .and by the pupils of Mrs Thompson and Miss Cain were very popular, as well as a recitation by Mrs Gibbons. Community singing led by Mrs Thompson and Mrs N. Carter was indulged in, and two wall competitions created much interest. « An enjoyable afternoon tea was served, the highlight being the birthday cake with its 17 candles. A Bring and Buy Stall did brisk business.
The winners of the competitions were as follows: Best sugar bag article, Mrs Thompson 1; Mrs Miller 2; Mrs Matchitt 3. Best flower, Mrs Brizzle l;Mrs Wilson 2; Mrs D. MacDonald 3. Best fruit, Mrs D. MacDonald 1; Mrs McGougan 2; Mrs N. MacDonald 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Roberts 1; Mrs Jensen 2; Mrs Barr 3.
