YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB
PROGRESS AT EDGECUMBE
Since its resuscitation in March •of this year the Edgecumbe Young Farmers’ Club has. resumed its normal activities. It is practically a new •club as only one pre-war member remains. - The roll stood at 18 but has subsequently been reduced by the departure of two members from the district and the transfer of four members to a newly formed club. One new member has been enrolled. The first few meetings were devoted to set and impromptu speeches and debates in order to select a debating team to represent the club in the Y.F.C. district competition. Subjects debated included “Stripping v Non-stripping” and “Town v Country Life.” An interesting discussion held on the topic “That both the nation and the individual would benefit from a system of collective farming.” The chairman gave a brief outline of the issues involved and then each member expressed his views. Most though by no means all speakers were in the negative. The club has also benefited from two most interesting and instructive talks. One was given by Mr Barwell, Supervisor to the Bay of Plenty District Pig Council. Mr Barwell described' and illustrated the evolution of the modern pig and went on to deal with the type of pig required for the overseas market. The speaker also discussed general .care and management and described some of the factors adversely affecting production. Mr W. A. McCracken at a recent club meeting, deal with the setting and operation of the plough and described the procedure generally followed when ploughing a field.
