Just back from “Blighty,” he blew in to see his old pal, the tobacconist. Soon they were talking of old times. Presently he said: “Is the New Zealand tobacco I remember so well still to the fore?” “How long have you been away?” queried the tobacconist. “Twelve years, and believe me, I’ve travelled some since then!” “Why, yes,” said the tobacconist. “Toasted’s going stronger than ever! In fact, the five blends, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold, and tailormades, are reckoned best sellers.” “My hat! Let’s have a pound of my favourite, Cut Plug No. 10,” said the returned wanderer. “I’ve never found its equal.” “It has no equal, if you ask me,” said the tobacconist. “It’s in a class by itself; it’s toasted. Why, the manufacturers, the National Tobacco Company, now own works covering four acres. They’re running a really important industry.” “Good on them! At that rate they’re helping to keep New Zealand on the map!” “They sure are!” said the tobacconist, and with a hearty handgrip they parted.
