WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WHAKATANE JUNE MEETING Mrs Crozier presided over a verygood attendance and the meeting opened in the usual manner. Business was dealt with very expeditiously followed by the social part of the afternoon consisting of an exchange programme by members of the Otakiri W.I.
After the appointment of Mrs Crozier as delegate to the forthcoming Dominion Conference several of the remits were discussed. Members decided to purchase a bolt of material for C.0.R.5.0. sewing, following which the Lady Galway Guild convenor gave her report from which it was gleaned that over 600 garments had been packed and despatched during the month. The president then handed over to Mrs Armstrong, Otakiri W.I. president and the entertainment was continued non-stop until afternoon tea time. All of the programme with the exception of a solo by Mrs Armstrong was comedy and burlesque opening with a poem composed especially for the occasion by Mrs Carr and given by her. A burlesque in costume on the Eisteddfod ‘set piece’ Apply Blossoms caused hilarious amusement as did also a dance ‘Salome’ by Mrs Peck. Members then enjoyed one of the ever popular song-story competitions A novel form of entertainment was a mime performed by several players in the setting of a beauty salon and as several of the audience ‘laughed till they. cried’ the exchange programme was voted a ‘howling success.’ After the serving of afternoon tea the meeting closed with the National Anthem. Competitions resulted as follows: Bottle preserved peaches, Mrs King Snr. 1; Mrs Comer 2. Best flower, Mrs Cairns 1; Mrs Larsen 2. Three parsnips, Mrs Patterson 1; Mrs Fennell 2. The president announced that the material for C.0.R.5.0. garments had been cut out and was ready for distribution to members. The Golden Thread, given by Mrs Sutcliffe, was ‘Women of Portugal.’. Mrs Crozier then demonstrated the making of a wool quilt using the ‘small bag’ method and this was followed by several members describing other methods; members showed a keen interest.
