BAY OF PLENTY WIN ONE POINT MATCH At Opotiki on Saturday, Bay of Plenty defeated Poverty Bay in an even contest by 10 points to 9. Bay of Plenty took play to the Poverty Bay end from the kick off until Parker, with a good kick cleared to halfway. Clax-ke, the home fullback was kicking accurately and gained a lot of ground. McKinley, the visitors’ centre was cutting his way through and making openings for E. Uarrington who proved a particularly dangerous player. From one run down the line Carrington carried play to the home goal line, M. Delamere forcing. Shortly after Delamere cut through beautifully and made a good run to near the goal line where he transferred to Tapsell who was pulled back for a forward pass’. Torrie, the visitors’ half, worked the blind side passing to Carrington. Poverty Bay was awarded a penalty kick, McKinley taking a long shot which fell short, D. Seton clearing. Tapsell ran right across the field and passed to the backs but a Poverty Bay forward intercepted and passed to Summersby who handed on to McKinley who raced over. McGregor’s shot at goal missed. Poverty Bay 3, Bay of Plenty 0. The Bay of Plenty at this stage were getting a monopoly of the ball from the scrum, but the backs were not able to penetrate. McKinley, the visitors’ centre broke through, Delamere failing with his tackle, and Gardiner cleared to half-way. Bay of Plenty were now attacking strongly and took play to the corner flag. From a scrum Hooper ran round and passed to Tapsell, who raced over the line to touch down in a handy position. M. Delamere missed the kick. Poverty Bay 3, Bay of Plenty 3. With another penalty kick, Delamere kicked to the corner flag as half-time was called. The home forwards attacked vigorously in the second half, but McGregor with a long kick gained about 50 yards, Clarke knocking on. The Bay of Plenty backs received the ball from the scrum, the ball travelling out to Delamere, whose kick bounced off an opposing player and the visitors carried play to their own quarter. A long shot at goal from a penalty kick fell short. Delamere again put the home team on the attack with a long kick to the corner. The home backs attacked but failed to penetrate, and J. Clarke, the home fulback, picking the ball up at the quarter way line landed -a beautiful field goal. Bay of Plenty 7, Poverty Bay 3. Bay of Plenty backs opened up an attack, but the visitors were quick to seize the opportunity from a dropped pass to sweep play, the length of the field for about ten men to handle the ball before McGregor went over for a try near the posts. McGregor’s kick missed, striking the posts. Bay of Plenty 7, Poverty Bay 6.
Poor passing by the home, backs again let the visitors through but Clarke saved and cleared. The visitors in attempting to find the line kicked to Morris who ran up and kicked to near the goal line where Bay of Plenty pressed for a time. Carrington made a good run and kicked to Clarke who found the line with a good kick. Gardiner broke away and passed to Ranapea who went over for a good try. Clarke missed the- kick. Bay of Plenty 10, Poverty Bay 6. In a line-out, Poverty Bay made a long pass over the heads of the forwards to the first five-eighth, J. Richards, the ball then travelling out to the wing who was forced out. Poverty Bay were straining every effort to score and they, were rewarded, when from a scrum the ball went out to the backs, the centre, McKinley touching down fairly wide out. E. Carrington missed a difficult kick. Bay of Plenty 10, Poverty Bay 9. Mr L. Davies was referee.
