WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

GARDENING CIRCLE MEETS The May meeting of the Gardening Circle was held at Mrs Hannah’s residence, Mrs Fennell presiding. Present: Mesdames Crozier, Stewart, Hannah, Fennell, Hellawell and Murphy. Apologies were received from Mesdames Cairns, Bennett, Dixon, Sloane, Caisley and Armstrong. ,

A monthly reading on vegetables was read by all. The roll call “Garden remedies” was well responded to Mrs Fennell ably demonstrated the replanting of shrubs. Afternoon tea was served, after which the competition were judged. Results: Three Chrysanthemums, Mrs Hannah. Best vegetable, Mrs Hannah.

The June meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Armstrong, Hillcrest. Mrs Fennell presided over a very good attendance. A very good article on Show Exhibits was read by all as-well as the monthly reading. The roll call, Uses of Herbs, ..was very interesting. A herb competition •with theptipedicinal values was jypn by MrS. -Patterson. Mrs Fennell ■;'cTemonstrated the pruning of fruit -trees. ■ • , , ■

Competitions were:. A, Vase of winter decoration: Mrs Stewart andMrs Fennell 1. B, Best vegetable: Mrs Fennell 1. Afteroon tea was served and a very pleasant afternoon was brought do a close. - ■- • - ■
