NOXIOUS WEEDS

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES EARMARKED FOR SPECIFIED LANDS ONLY In a letter to the Whakatane County Council last week, the Department of Agriculture stated that with regard to the conditions associated with the control of Noxious Weeds Scheme, in future all councils were required to confine the work undertaken by them from the allocation made by the Department to work on unoccupied Crown lands, unindividualised Native lands, abandoned farms and farms of indigent owners. Councils would probably continue to make their gangs available, but it must be regarded as a matter of negotiation between the occupier and the council, Consequently the Department would not be concerned with the question of charges and recoveries in respect of such work. This would no doubt have some influence on the allocation for the 1946-47 season. If application had already been made it should be reviewed in the light of the above information.

The County Clerk reported that 1945-46 grant was £3500 of which £SOO was payable to the Native Department for expenditure on materials for ragwort eradication at Ruatoki.

It was decided that application be made for £3500 ragwort grant of which £SOO be allocated to Ruatoki for Native Department expenditure on ragwort eradication materials. The County Clerk reported that the following resolution was carried at the Works Committee meeting held the previous day: “That the Finance Committee considers the advisability of the Noxious Weeds Inspector supervising and directing the expenditure of the annual Government ragwort eradication grant.” It was agreed that Inspector Carling report on the matter that if the expenditure of this grant were transferred to him, he would be able to handle the position.
