WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

EDGECUMBE MEETING A very pleasant afternoon was held by the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute for the July meeting, the occasion being an exchange programme with the Thornton Institute. Routine business was dealt with and remits for the Dominion Conference Were discussed. Long Service Badges were presented to three very good members, namely Mrs Hall, Mrs Goldsmith and Mrs Wilson, the president thanking them for their untiring efforts for the good of the Institute. Bank books were presented to Baby Brian Yardley and Baby Mervyn Malpas. Mrs Pearse, on behalf of the Institute presented Mrs List, who is leaving the district, with a gift and a beautiful posy and wished her much happiness in her new. home, and hoped she would be able to visit the Institute at some time. Mrs List replied and said that she had enjoyed the meetings very much and was sorry to leave, but hoped she would be able to return for the next birthday meeting. Mrs Robb President Thornton Institute, conducted the remainder of the day’s programme first presenting Mrs Pearse and Mrs Blair with dainty shoulder sprays. A very amusing play reading entitled “Quits” was presented by four Thornton members, and made the audience realise why men laugh at women’s “hats.”

Mrs Stewart sang two delightful songs and was well applauded. Several competitions were held and were keenly contested. Afternoon tea was, as usual, a highlight of the day. A heavily laden sales table was well patronised. Entries for the monthly competitions were of a high standard and judging was quite difficult. The winners were as follows:

Savouries: Mrs Burgess 1; Mrs Blair, 2; Mrs Spiers 3. Leeks: Mrs Burgess 1; Mrs Nowland 2; Mrs Spiers 3. Quilting: Mrs Pearse 1; Mrs King 2; Mrs Blair 3. Violets: Mrs Hodson 1; Mrs Pearse 2; Mrs Malpas 3. Best flower: Mrs King 1; Mrs List 2; Mrs Goldsmith and Mrs Pearse 3.
