JUNE BALLOTS
MORE THAN 100 FOR MONTH FARMS FOR SERVICEMEN Just over 100 farming sections, representing a total area of almost 26,000 acres were ballotted for among ex-servicemen during the month of June, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. Situated ’throughout the Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, King Country, Wairarapa, Marlborough and Canterbury districts, most of the sections were subdivisions of blocks of land acquired by the Crown for servicemen settlement. They included part of the well-known Galatea block in the Bay of Plenty, Taheke in Hawke’s Bay, the Te Maipi Farm Settlement in the Wairarapa and the Home Farm Settlement in Canterbury. For all of the sections there were many eager applicants, comprising men who were graded A by their rehabilitation farming sub-commit-tees for the type of farming in the district in which the, section for which they applied is situated. On many of the sections considerable development work remains to be done, and successful applicants will be employed on a wages basis until such necesary improvements have been effected. In all cases the offer is on a renewable lease basis with the option of agreement for sale and purchase. Early this month, a further 24 farms will be offered by ballot to ex-servicemen, the total acreage involved being approximately 3800. Fourteen of these are dairying sections in the South Auckland and North King Country districts, nine are in the Southern King Country, and are suitable for dairying and some sheep, and the remaining secton is a dairy farm in the Rangitikei district.
