WAIMANA MEETING " The monthly meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute was held in the Waimana Hall, and there was a good attendance of members—Mrs F. J. Savage presided.
ft was decided to hold the Institute birthday as usu|l in August and to extend invitations to sister Institutes. A telegram was sent to Miss Naida Hewitt of Waimana, who was on board the Mariposa on the eve of its departure for America. The telegram conveyed good wishes for her future life and a safe voyage.
The Golden Thread was given by Mrs Fleming, who read a paper on Sir Bernard Freyberg. •The day’s competitions were:— Three parsnips,JMrs C. White 1; Mrs I. Savage 2; Mrs Such 3. Three carrots, Mrs C. N. White 1; Mrs Such 2; Mrs I. Savage 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Marra 1; Mrs F. Bell 2; Mrs Whiteman 3. Best double flower, j Mrs J. Boynton T; Mrs S. A. Eagle 2; Mrs F. Bell 3. Best single flower, Mrs Whiteman 1; Mrs J. Boynton 2; Mrs H. Bell 3. Knitted cardigan or jumper, Mrs I. Savage 1; Mrs F. Bell 2.
A much enjoyed vocal solo was given by Mrs G. Mitchell, and it being a cold afternoon members join-
ed-in a chain waltz. Afternoon tea was served and the 'singing of the National Anthem' closed; the meeting. ■' MEETING AT THORNTON The July meeting of. the Thornton Woman’s Institute was held on July 11, Mrs A. Robb presiding over a fair attendance. After the usual business had been dealt with, mention whs made of the successful social evening held earlier in the month. 'As a surplus had been raised over |the 'amount necessary for the Conference delegates expenses, ;it was decided that a donation of £5 should be made to the Red Cross “Food for Britain” appeal. ■ ..The roll call “My worst mistake in the kitchen” caused much amusement. Members were reminded that.-; the August fneeting 1 would commence promptly at V p.m.
j ‘ The social part of the .afternoon was in charge of visiting i&gecumfcie members, programmes being exchanged with that Institute for this month. A bright and varied programme ifems, games and comjpetitionsiSwas enjoyed by-everyone. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
Competitions for the day were well contested the following being the results: Best bloom, Mrs Ducker 1; Mrs Robb 2. JBest vegetable, Mrs Bell 1; Mrs Watts 2. Cushion cover, Mrs Gardiner 1; Mrs D. Branch 2. Ginger bread, Mrs Watts 1, Mrs Ducker 2. Grapefruit or lemons, Mrs Watts 1; Mrs D. Branch 2.
