Danger to Pedestrians

An analysis of accidents in Wellington streets and on the Hutt Road last year made by the city engineer, Mr K. E. Luke, brings out that 50 per cent, of all these accidents, serious and minor, resulted in injury to pedestrians. In 1938 the proportion was just under 40 per cent., but since 1943 has been 50 per cent, or over; in 1943 the figure was 53.7. There were nine fatal accidents, and for each person killed 31 were injured. Saturday was the most dangerous day last year, and 4 to 5 p.m. was the most dangerous hour, but it was expected that Saturday closing would move the dangerous day of the week to Friday.

Power Stations in Earthquake Neither the Lake Coleridge nor the Highbank hydro electric stations suffered structural damage in the recent earthquake, although the origin of the disturbance, believed to be near Lake Heron, would be only about 20 miles from the former and 30 miles from the latter station. Lake Coleridge received a severe shaking. Several windows in the power house were broken, and some plaster fell from the walls. In the village several brick chimneys fell. Officials of the State Hydro Electric Department denied, emphatically a rumour current in Ashburton that a crack in the foundations of the Lake Coleridge station had developed during the earthquake.
