PRODUCTION TARGETS

IT is interesting to consider the production targets which have been set the primary producers of the Dominion by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Roberts) for the 1946-47 season. These are as Wheat 250,000 to 300,000 acres; oats for threshing 50,000 acres; malting barley 40,000 acres; feed barley 15,000 acres; maize 12,000 acres; potatoes 25,000 acres; onions 1000 acres; butterfat 190,000 tons; meat 530,000 tons; wool 160,000 tons. The Minister said that if the expected overseas demand for pulse crops eventuated New Zealand might well step up its acreage sown in peas. An indication had been received that up to 20,000 tons of peas would give much-needed relief to many sorely-pressed countries.
