PAROA’S FINE WIN . ROTORUA CHAMPION TEAM . BEATEN The leading team .of the Rotorua competition, Waikito, was not able to field its full strength against Paroa but the demands of industry also prevented theK visiting side from parading its best team and four juniors were recruited to bring it up to strength. Consequently, the two sides met under conditions about equally below best. The match, played on the No. 1 ground at Arawa Park, had a smaller gallery than usual, but it was well worth 'seeing, especially in its demonstration of line kicking, which is a tactic poorly developed 'in Rotorua Rugby. Over-eagerness was the main fault among ~ the backs of both teams but the forwards were on the ball the whole time. Play became ragged sometimes but that was no doubt inevitable with the pace that was set from whistle to whistle.

Waikite played from the eastern end, facing the sun, which was sometimes troublesome. Paroa were first to make a drive, but within five minutes Waikite after missing an initial opportunity from a penalty kick, raided down the southern line, and G. deal scored neatly. J. Hohua’s kick was a beauty.—Waikito s—o.

In the next three minutes, the same play ran for Paroa; first a futile penalty kick at goal ,then a try by P. Awa, converted by J. Dodd.—s all.

Another almost certain try for the home side .was spoiled by a misunderstanding between three of their men as to who was to take t,he ball over the line, Bad show, Several exciting passages followed in the next 15 minutes, the Paroa full-back and the first five-eighths being excellent in defence. From a good position, after the backs had carried play close to the Waikito line, J. Dodd put Paroa again in lead with a penalty goal.—Paroa 8 —5, and half-time.

A penalty kick from half-way taken by G, Lawson, nearly put the score level again. The ball came off the ground, to be gathered by T. Riini, who ran straight for the line. The try was not converted.

—Paroa 11—5. The next ten minutes were torrid and finally T. Kinita scored a try after it appeared to have been

forced down. J. Hohua added the extra points, to make the tally 10—11 against the home team. The last score came in the last few minutes of play, when M. Harawira scored another try for the visitors, which J. Dodd again failed to convert.—Paroa 14—10. Mr. H. Cresswell was the referee.
