AN EXPLANATION

RECENT KING STREET FIRE An unfortunate misunderstanding with regard to the fire in King Street last Sunday evening, led us to record the fact that Mr. A. E. Cook was about to become a tenant of the house concerned. We learn subsequently that such was not the case. The confusion arose as a result of the potential owner’s name also being Cook. Mr. A. E. Cook, who is conducting the Evangelistic campaign with which the Whakatane public, is fully conversant has resided in the County since his arrivel, and had no intention at any time of occupying the house concerned in the fire. A peculiar feature of the fire itself is that for three days prior to the outbreak,' no one had lived in the building, and as far as can be ascertained, no person had approached it. Its origin remains a total mystery, and it is understood the police are making enquiries.
