OUTBREAK OF FIRE
DWELLING PARTLY GUTTED LAST NIGHT’S BLAZE A fire which broke out shortly after 8 p.m. last night gutted part of* the interior of a small five-roomed dwelling on the corner of King Street and Stewart Street. Although the flames already had a good grip when the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade arived, they were soon brought under control and extinguished.
The house, -which is the property of Mr G. L. Washer, King Street, was actually untenanted at the time of. the outbreak, one family being in the process of moving out, and another moving in. The effects of the former were packed and stored in the rooms which escaped the flames, but those of the tenants moving in (Mr A. E. Cook, well known in connection with the recent Truth for the Times lecture series, his wife, and assistant) were not so fortunate a number of Valuable books particularly, being damaged or destroyed. The fire, the cause of which is unknown, originated in a small room at the rear of the house, and swept through one side, scorching the passage and kitchenette. Those rooms on the south side, escaped. The building was covered by insurance.
