SCOUT PRESENTATION

SANDFORD TICKETS WINNERS CEREMONY AT WAIOHOU All Waiohou turned out last Saturday when with members of the Whakatane and Awakeri troops as visitors and guests Scout. Commissioners KingsleySmith and Matthews and Guide Commissioner Rushbrooke visited the local troop, and made formal presentation of the Sandford Ticket certificates to winners at the recent Patrol Leaders Camp.

Under S.M. R. Judd the local Scout and Guide units were drawn up in the school yard where they made an impressive picture of smartness and uniformity. The Guides were particularly neat. An inspection of each unit was made by the Commissioners, who warmly congratulated Captain Judd on her Guide troop and S.M. Judd upon the efficiency of his Scouts. A group from the Awakeri troop under S.M. Howell also attended and added appreciably to the size of the parade. The Maoris were particularly interested in the presence of two Sea Scouts and three Cubs, whom they saw for the first time.

Both Guide and Scout Commissioners spoke to the assembly on the aims of the movement and the essence of brotherhood which permeated the whole of its structure. It was most pleasing, they declared to discover such progressive company’s and Troops in the heart of the Maori district of Waiohou, and they trusted that both would continue to improve and to flourish.

District Commissioner Matthews then presented the Sandford Ticket certificates to Patrol Leaders Mita, McCaulay, Ripaki and Miki (Waiohou) and to Jensen and Carter (Awakeri) and Dockray (Citizens). He explained that each had been earned at the camp held at Lake Rotorna before Christmas and that -even then the certificate was only part of the ultimate award, which was designed to bring out in Patrol Leaders all the latent leadership and initiative they possessed. He congratulated each boy.

A delicious afternoon tea was served by the Guides, the visitors being deeply appreciative of the fact that the cooking had been mainly carried out by the Maori girls themselves in the model kitchen and Home Science section at the rear of the school building. A pleasing and interesting interlude followed in which the assembled Scouts and Guides gave a really first class exhibition of Maori games, past-songs, action songs and poi waiatas. The visitors were charmed with each item which won the warmest applause. , In thanking Scouts and Guides the Scout Commissioner said he spoke for all present when he said that they had enjoyed Waiohou’s hospitality to the utmost, and trusted that in some way they might be able to repay it.

The various cars drew out with lusty cheers from the assembled Maori boys and girls.
