LABOUR CANDIDATE
BAY OF PLENTY ELECTORATE MR RAYMOND BOORD . Mr Raymond Boord, of Rotorua, has been selected to contest the Bay of Plenty seat on behalf of the Labour Party at the general election to be held in November next. Mr Boord has the distinction of having left New Zealand “in the ranks” with the 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary Force, and returning to the Dominion as a lieutenant-colonel. At the termination of his overseas service, Mr Boord had charge of an infantry unit for five months. Prior to the war, Mr Boord was farming near Rotorua for 13 years, but sold his interest to enter the army. His family have long been connected with the district, his grandfather having first settled on a farm nearly 80 years ago. Mr Boord, who is 38, in 1942 was dux of the Feilding Agricultural High School, where he was prominent in debating. He has represented the Feilding Agricultural High School in the Ist XI and Ist XV.
Enlisting in January, 1940, Mr Boord served in Greece, and, some months after returning to Egypt, entered 0.C.T.U., being promoted to lieutenant with a first class pass in February, 1942. He served with the Bth Army in the second battle of Alamein 'and remained with the 24th Battalion in the campaigns through Africa and Italy.
He became second in command of the 24th Battalion in May, 1945, and its commanding officer in July, 1945. He returned to New Zealand last February.
