Horseflesh Exports
Mr A. M. Carpenter, at a recent meeting of the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee, suggested that as horseflesh was eaten in parts of Britain and on the Continent, New Zealand might be able to help the food position by exporting this class of meat. The question was referred to the National ■ Committee which, after an investigation, has replied that there is no freezing technique for horseflesh, and, as the meat has a tendency to taint other meat with which it comes into contact, export would be difficult in any case. It has been decided to abandon the proposal.
Mr Semple’s Topper
The hats of the Dominion’s Cabinet Ministers have occasionally become the subject of comment, usually more kind than cruel, states a Wellington newspaper. Two cases that come readily to mind are the black Homburg worn by the Prime Minister on many occasions and the bowler hat associated with Mr Webb. Now there has been added another to the list. For the first time in the memory of his friends the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) appeared on a recent Monday under a top hat. It was a special occasion, of course —the swearing-in of the Dominion’s hew Governor-General—and Mr Semple has not stated if he intends to make a belated effort for leadership in the notoriety of Ministerial headgear.
