EROSION PROBLEM

TANEATUA-RUATOKI ROAD

COUNTY COUNCIL PREPARED TO ASSIST

The Whakatane County Council decided at its meeting last Tuesday to assist in the construction of protective work in connection with the serious erosion which was taking place on the Taneatua-Ruatoki Road.

Mr O. Wilson, introducing the matter said he wrote as a ratepayer of fifty years’ standing, and stated that half his property had already been washed away and that if the remaining land broke in places, his buildings would be endangered. He had brought the matter to the Council’s notice several times, and now asked that it be dealt with urgently. Councillors discussing the request were of the opinion that it was not within the scope of the Council’s operations to protect private property from river erosion. They were, however, prepared to submit particulars to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council. On Cr McGougan’s notice, it was decided to bring the matter to the notice of the Native Department, and if it were prepared to do something, the Counoil, for its part, was prepared to assist in any way.
