REAPPOINTMENT!

COUNTY COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE MR H. C. McCREADY ELECTED Following receipt of a legal opinion on the eligibility of Cr H. C. McCready for re-appoint-ment on the Hospital Board, the Whakatane County Council yesterday decided to reappoint him on the grounds that he had been elected by the ratepayers and that as far as could be guaged, the ratepayers had given no indication that they had lost con-

fidence in him. The chairman mentioned that the Finance Committee had decided to refer the matter to the full Council. The legal opinion had stated that in view of the fact that persons who were disqualified were definitely set out in the statutes and did not include one who vacated office through ‘absence without leave,’ such a person was not debarred from re-ap-pointment as the representative on a Hospital Board of a contributing local authority.

In moving for Cr McCready’s reappointment, Cr Cawte said that perhaps he had slipped in not making a formal apology but he had been elected by a big majority of ratepayers and should go back. Cr Hunter seconded, observing that the Board’s action might be a lesson to him but from the council’s point of view he had always fought hard for the ratepayers and endeavoured to keep down expenses.

Cr Luxton enquired if the council had not called for new nominations as was normally done.

The chairman replied that this had not been done while awaiting the legal opinion and further that it was not necessary to do that in any case as the council could make its own appointments. The motion was then carried.

Returning thanks Cr McCready said that he welcomed a further chance to serve the ratepayers and that it would be nice to be once again amongst friends. He hoped to be even more active on the Board in future.
