Crippled Children’s Society Appeal On Friday, June 28, the Crippled Children’s Society will be holding its annual appeal in Whakatane. It might be pointed out that in the past, this town has benefited considerably through the activities of the Society, which once again looks to the public for the support necessary to carry on with the work. It has been proved in the past that residents of Whakatane are ever in sympathy with a deserving cause; the Crippled Children’s Society falls into that category. Donations, including produce and other gifts, may be left with Mr S. Armstrong, c/o Ford Garage, Commerce Street. Beaten! The other day we happened to notice an almost perfect rainbow which swept in an arc, with one end dipping into the sea and the other resting on Hillcrest. It remained for some time, and thinking that now. was the time to prove the old story about the pot of gold grabbed a shovel and made off. We chased the end of the rainbow about all over Hillcrest, before we managed to sneak up behind it and catch it unawares. We shovelled furiously, and in a few minutes had a hole large enough to put a house in. We found the pot all right but somebody else must have been there first—the gold was gone! (To Let: Roomy hole, selected Hillcrest site, no conveniences, careful tenant only, no children, £5 5s per week. Written replies with references to “Gold Digger” etc.)
