Age Not Known
Fifty years ago registration of births by the Maori population was not a regular practice, with the result that many Maoris of that era now living are unable to state their exact age. A case in point occurred in the Auckland Supreme Court when a Maori claimant for damages was unable to fully satisfy the court on the question of his age, which he placed at 58 years. The information was required for computation of prospective loss of income through the loss of a leg. No birth certificate was available. 'All the information the plaintiff could supply on the point was that he left school at 12 years of age, and in 1917 he joined the Maori Battalion. That, of course, was 29 years ago. What his age was ,at the time of enlistment he could not say beyond the fact that he was a private among other Maoris, some younger and some older than himself.
